Born 1893 (or May 29, 1894) in Toronto Canada, died Jan 20, 1989. Popular on both the London and New York stages, it was The Third Little Show in which Beatrice Lillie sang the vintage 1917 "There Are Fairies At the Bottom of My Garden" along with Noel Coward's "Mad Dogs and Englishmen." The show ran for 17 weeks. Billed as "the funniest woman in the world", her knack for maintaining a Victorian decorum amidst vulgarity was often imitated. She made many recordings and could hardly be classified as a blue performer. These are listed for their slightly saucy content on a specialist label. Her rendition of "There Are Fairies at the Bottom of Our Garden" [..."and one of them is ME!"] became a virtual anthem of the gay community in the 1930's, words by Rose Fyleman music by Liza Lehmann (1917 Chappell & Co). Snoops the Lawyer dates from 1919.
